FAWM Monday: Review and recap

February has ended, and that means FAWM is over. I didn't hit the goal of 14 songs this year, but I did have some great wins. Have a listen as you read along.

Four Favourites

There are 3 songs that I really like how they are taking shape. The song She Says tops the list. In fact, there's a great chance I'll be working with Ryan at Elevation Music Studio to do a full production of this song and possibly a music video as well.

Next to mention is a song called You Are. This song has some great dynamics going from the mellow verse to more upbeat and melodic chorus. I would like to revisit the transition between the verse and the chorus on this song. But as it is right now I think it's a great foundation to work with and polish in the future.

The song Feel Your Love was a great experience writing a song that was done on the piano. I'm a guitarist, not a piano player. So the change from guitar to the piano was refreshing. I was able to learn more about making music thanks to this song.

Finally writing that song

Sometime over the summer, I'm not sure when exactly, but I would say June, or July, I came up with the idea of a song from the perspective of someone having an identity crisis. I sat down to write that song three or four times. When I showed a friend of mine the song From the Outside, I realized that with some changes, this song is a great base for my identity crisis song.

By adding a second voice, possibly a woman's voice, the two voices could represent the two sides of the same person having these different thoughts. it would be especially effective on the chorus.

Right now the chorus is

I see my life from the outside
I look on through to the inside
I wish I knew who I see
When I’m not with you

You see my life from the inside
And that I feel like I’m outside
I wish I knew who you see
When I’m beside you

Changing the chorus so that it is in the first person throughout and alternating voices could have a great effect on a listener that's experiencing these feelings of being disconnected from themselves.

Below is one idea I have for the new chorus my voice yellow is in and the other voice is green.

I see my life from the outside
I look on through to the inside
I wish I knew who I see
When I’m not with you

I see my life from the inside
And that I feel like I’m outside
I wish I knew who I see
When I’m beside you

The last line in each stanza may be done as harmony, but I hope that gives you an idea where this song is heading. I don't know that this song is going to convey the message the way I want, but I do plan on exploring it later in the month.

Learning more every day

I used this February to learn about some new gear I got, like the GR-55 I used for the songs The Red Planet, and She Says.

I wrote my first piano based song and even went punk rock for one. So while I didn't hit the goal of 14 songs in the month, I did reach my goal of learning and growing more as a musician and a songwriter.

I would say that made the month a success.
